Relief Work
After the terrible earthquake on January 2001 our local friends immediately responded by collecting funds and materials to help the Scheduled Castes – those who used to be called and treated as Untouchables and who often suffer discrimination especially at times like this. At the same time many friends from Taiwan sent us funds to help this work. As a result we were able to help over 23,000 people with food, basic house-hold supplies and temporary accommodation.
Rehabilitation Work
With funds left our local partner (Bahujan Hitay Gujarat, set up by those who managed to the earthquake relief work) set up two hostels, one for boys and one for girl whose families were affected by the earthquake. As it is the area is very backward educationally especially for girls, and so we hope that this work will be useful even when earthquake rehabilitation is no longer relevant. Hostels are places where children come to stay while they attend local schools. They are given nutritious food, support in their studies and most of all they have psychologically nourishing support from the wardens and staff.
It had been hoped to manage the running costs of the hostels on grants from the Gujarat State Government after the first year. However the State Government has now changed its policy and no longer gives grants to new hostels. This means that we are in urgent need of funds to run the hostels. |
